Significance: Val-kill a 173 acre site a few miles from FDR's home, was Eleanor Roosevelt's weekend retreat from 1926 until the President's death and then her Hyde Park home until her own death in 1962. Val-Kill was the place she considered her home. It was here that she entertained many famous and important people from all over the world who came to seek her advice or support regarding political, economic, and social matters. In May, 1977, Val-Kill became the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site.
