Significance: The Methodist resort of Ocean City was founded in the late 1870s during a period of religious revival, advocating family values and temperance. Simultaneous to its religious beginnings, the town's first boardwalk was built, spurring a long tradition of ocean front amusements. Though the aura of religious inspiration is no longer present, Ocean City is still a dry town that prides itself on maintaining a "family resort" image.
