Significance: The New Portland (Wire) Bridge is the only early American suspension bridge that remains basically unaltered, aside from John A. Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct.The New Portland Suspension Bridge is the only extant example of a suspension bridge with covered wood towers in the United States.
