Significance: The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and preservation district includes more than twenty structures significant to the lives of the 39th president and his wife, Rosalynn, in their hometown of Plains, Georgia. ... Although Jimmy Carter (born 1924) was raised on a farm in nearby Archery, his parents worked in Plains. It was there he met and married Rosalynn Smith, and launched his political career. The Carters have lived in various residences throughout Plains, all included in the National Historic Site that was legislated in 1987.
