Significance: The Potomac Aqueduct was an important component in the integrated canal system serving the Potomac River watershed. Built during a major expansion in America's long distance transportation system, it was an important structure that demonstrated the capabilities of wood construction in meeting the needs of canal engineering. It is also locally significant because of its role in advancing the financial interests of Alexandria, VA. over those of Georgetown in Washington D.C.
