Significance: Soldiers Home established by Congress in 1851. Corn Rigs was the summer home of George Riggs who sold his farm to the Soldiers Home. House used as first dormitory and as summer retreat for Presidents Buchanan, Lincoln, Hayes, and Arthur. Lincoln finished the final draft of the Emancipation proclamation here. Lincoln also named the building Anderson Cottage in honor of Gen. Robert Anderson, commander of Fort Sumter.
