Annotation: Considers the role of various land settlement schemes in the creation of a rural wage labor market and in the evolution of a coastal/hinterland, plantation/peasant dichotomy within Guyana. Situates these schemes in relation to the abolition of slavery, the beginning of East Indian indenture, and efforts to protect interests of the sugar industry.
