- At Index Table 3, use the photo card catalog to find photographs related to forestry. What subject heading do you look under to find this? How many photos do you find? Give five examples
- At Index Table 3, there are black binders full of photocopies of photographs from the Archives. There are also spiral-bound books on top of the photo card catalog that provide lists and information about some of these photos. Look at some of the binders with photos whose numbers begin with 94-. Do you find any photos of St. Ignatius in here? From what date?
- At the oral history cabinets, use the People Will Talk index to find collections related to fur trappers in Montana. How many interviews are there? What year were they done?
- Also at the oral history cabinets, find the call number for the recording of a woman smokejumper in Montana. What is her name?
- Go to the cabinet where the finding aids for archives are kept. Look at the finding aid for the Joseph Dixon papers. Is there any correspondence in the collection from Frank B. Linderman? What folder is it in? (Hint: there is a name index at the back of the finding aid.)
- Go to the map card catalog. Do we have any maps of Yellowstone National Park? What is the date of the oldest one?
- Ask for the guide to the Sanborn maps microfilm at the Level One reference desk (the call number is 912.786 s198 guide). Look at the microfilm of the Sanborn maps for St. Ignatius in 1927. Do you see any buildings that are still there today?
- Use GrizNet to find books on travel in Montana. (Hint: use the subject Montana--Description and Travel.) How many items do you find? What is the date of the earliest one? (Another hint: use the "sort list" (SL) command; have GrizNet sort the materials by date.) Where is it located in the library?
Part II: The rest of the library (Levels 2, 3, 4, 5 are all fair game!)
- Where is the Missoulian kept in the library? Use GrizNet, Option 7, "Periodical Title," to find this out. Find the issue for date you were born. What's on the front page?
- Where is Sunset magazine kept in the library? Use GrizNet, Option 7, "Periodical Title," to find this out. You may know this magazine as a great source of recipes and American travel advice now, but who published it in 1910? What kind of information was in the magazine?
- In 1947, Gifford Pinchot published his autobiography, Breaking New Ground. Find this book in GrizNet using an author or title search. Who was Pinchot, and what was his most notable accomplishment?
- Mary Hunter Austin wrote evocative and popular prose and poetry about the American West. Does the library have any books by her? How many? Are there any published books of her correspondence? Do her writings relate to any of the research topics members of your class have picked?
