Young Henry J. Heinz planted a small plot of horseradish in
his family garden near Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. In his teens,
he began to bottle and sell dried and grated horseradish in
clear glass bottles. By 1869, he had converted his old homestead
into a horseradish cannery and the H.J. Heinz Co. was
born. More products followed and the "57 Varieties" trademark
originated with Heinz himself in 1896. Today, Heinz products
number in the thousands.
