Charles and Max Fleischmann came to America from Austria-Hungary in the 1860s in search of a better life. They decided that providing a better bread for Americans would be their goal. The brothers built a yeast plant in Cincinnati and in 1876 patented the first compressed yeast cake. They successfully introduced the cake at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Visitors loved their Vienna Bread and their success story was begun.
