Harvard graduate James Drummond Dole arrived in Hawaii in
1899. With $1,000 he bought a 64-acre government homestead.
Combining his business and horticulture degrees with his love
of farming, he decided to grow pineapples. In 1901, he built
a cannery, planted the first pineapples and incorporated the
business. Today the pineapple business is Hawaii's second largest
industry and the Dole name is a household word.
