compassCollections with
Descriptive (Bibliographic) Searching

Many American Memory collections have descriptive (bibliographic) information about an item or group of items. Some collections, primarily visual collections, have only descriptive information searching. Most on-line descriptive (bibliographic) records will include:

  • a title;
  • author(s) or other creator(s);
  • descriptive notes;
  • information about the format and publication of the original item;
  • other descriptive data; and
  • subject terms (see Glossary) assigned by a cataloger or subject expert.

Collections may be searched by keyword (see Glossary) or by using subject terms. Subject terms are chosen from thesauri such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, Thesaurus of Graphic Materials, or another recognized vocabulary standard. Tips for searching each collection can be found on the collection's Collection Connections Summary page.

Collections that provide descriptive searching are:

African-American Sheet Music, 1850-1920: Selected from the Collections of Brown University
Search descriptive information by keyword or browse Subject, Name, or Title indexes. Lyrics are not transcribed; and therefore not searchable.

America from the Great Depression to World War II: Photographs from the FSA-OWI, 1935-1945
From the main page, select to search either the 45,000 black-and-white or the 1,600 color photograph collection. The level of cataloging varies considerably. Because the color photo collection has greater depth in subject cataloging, searching it separately yields better results. Search descriptive information by keyword or browse a Subject, Creator, or State and Country indexes. Searching by place or topic works better than searching by specific dates.

American Environmental Photographs, 1891-1936: Images from the University of Chicago Library
Search by keyword or browse Subject, or Geographic Location indexes.

American Landscape and Architectural Design, 1850-1920, A Study Collection from the Harvard Graduate School of Design
Search descriptive information by keyword or browse Subject, State, or Name indexes.

American Leaders Speak: Recordings from World War I and the 1920 Election, 1918-1920
Browse Subject or Speaker indexes of the descriptive information, or search by keyword in the full text of the speeches (included in Notes section of descriptive information).

America's First Look into the Camera: Daguerreotype Portraits and Views, 1839-1864
Search descriptive information by keyword or browse a Subject index. Often, cataloging information is minimal because little is known about the daguerreotype. Catalogers use any physical evidence that is available, as well as consulting additional primary and secondary sources. Any external source is indicated in a note, and when a sitter’s identity remains unconfirmed, the probable sitter’s name is recorded in a note.

Architecture and Interior Design for 20th Century America: Photographs by Samuel Gottscho and William Schleisner, 1935-1955
Search descriptive information by keyword or browse a Subject index.

Around the World in the 1890s: Photographs from the World's Transportation Commission, 1894-1896
Search descriptive information by keyword, browse a Subject index, or browse Select a Country from the Trip Itinerary for help with place searches.

Baseball Cards, 1887-1914
Search descriptive information by keyword or browse Player, Team, League, City, or Card Set indexes.

Even though there are no written transcripts of the audio recordings, the descriptive information has extensive notes which are searchable by keyword. Browse Subject or Topics indexes.

Built in America: Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record, 1933-Present
