- From the main page, select to search either the 45,000 black-and-white or the 1,600 color photograph collection. The level of cataloging varies considerably. Because the color photo collection has greater depth in subject cataloging, searching it separately yields better results. - America's First Look into the Camera: Daguerreotype Portraits and Views, 1839-1864
- Search descriptive information by keyword or browse a Subject index. Often, cataloging information is minimal because little is known about the daguerreotype. Catalogers use any physical evidence that is available, as well as consulting additional primary and secondary sources. Any external source is indicated in a note, and when a sitter’s identity remains unconfirmed, the probable sitter’s name is recorded in a note.
