Evaluating Primary Sources

Scanning a Primary Source

What do you notice first? What impressions do you form? What significance does this item have? Is it an important source? How could this source be used? What kind of condition is this source in? Where has it been? Is the item a public or a private source?

Directions: This segment of the investigation should last 5-10 minutes. Take 5 minutes and jot down your first impressions. Use your natural curiosity, instincts, and guesses to begin directing you to a closer examination. Take 5 more minutes and look deeper. Note additional details below your first impressions.
