Preparing Pictures for the Slide Show

Choose photographs from the Library of Congress American Memory collections and create slide shows to use in student projects or presentations.

You can also take photographs with either a 35mm or digital camera. If you use a 35mm camera, you will need to scan the pictures.

When you use photographs from the American Memory collections, you will first need to save the image.

Saving an Image from a Web Site

1. Place the arrow on top of the image. Hold down on the mouse (right click in Windows) until a window pops up.

2. Highlight save image as and lift up on the mouse.

3. Pull down on the arrow next to the Save In dialog box and choose [C:] (to save on your hard drive) or 3 1/2 Floppy [A:] (to save on a floppy disk).

4. Click on the button for Create New Folder.

5. Type in the word images.

6. Make sure the New Folder you named images is highlighted. Click on Open.

7. You will notice that an open folder with the word images appears at the top of the menu. This means your picture will be saved in the images folder. The file already has a name. If it does not make any sense, rename it. Click on Save.

TIP: Save all of your images in the same folder.

Graphics Programs

Use a graphics program such as Graphic Converter (Macintosh) or Lview Pro (Windows) to resize and crop the photographs. Try to keep each of your images the same size and relatively small such as 2"x3". Save them in the GIF file format. Once you have assembled the photos you are ready to add them to a GIF animation program.

1. In a graphics program, resize and crop the photographs.

2. Make a plain background 1/4" larger in width and height than your photographs. Save this background image.

3. Copy and paste your photograph onto the background.

4. Pull down on File and Save As. Be sure you save it as a .gif file.

5. Repeat these steps until you have prepared all of your photographs.

TIP: Give your prepared images sequential filenames like slide1.gif, slide2.gif, etc. or sl1.gif, sl2.gif, etc. This will make it easier to assemble your slide show in either GIF Construction Set or GifBuilder.

Adding a GIF Animation to a Web Page

Use the image tag like the example below.

<IMG SRC="faces.gif" WIDTH="198" HEIGHT="252" BORDER="1">

TIP: You can change the width of the border around your animation with the border attribute. BORDER=0 hides the border entirely.
