Of course, horses in the early twentieth century also played the roles in sports that they continue to fulfill today -- for riding (DN-0051977), racing (SDN-001639), show jumping (DN-0009279), hunting (SDN-002339), and polo playing (SDN-003903). A citydweller in 1910 could expect to see horses on the streets every day. However, by 1930, horses were a much rarer sight (DN-0090216) remembered perhaps when people used the term "horsepower" to describe the power of a gasoline engine.
