Crowds would gather in front of the building to read the latest news, literally "hot off the press" (DN-001817). Sometimes the crowds were job-hunters who wanted to see the " Help Wanted" advertisements as soon as possible (DN-0051331, DN-0009359A, DN-0085379).  On a few occasions, the crowds in front of the building were the newspaper's own workers on strike (DN-0058610, DN-0058611). The Chicago Daily News searchlight was used to signal election results to waiting crowds in 1912 (DN-0059875) and on many election years thereafter (DN-0070587).
