There is a sixteen page accompanying text explaining the purposes for which the map was produced. The following statement on the second page of the preface not only proclaims the accuracy of the map, but indicates the map's potential audience: “In the absence of any minute general survey of the topography of the State, the present Map has been constructed from the best and most authentic materials yet in existence...This Map will be found to be altogether the most complete and reliable of California yet published and one that will furnish all needed information for the emigrant, or the many persons in all parts of the country who have friends or relatives in the new State. No pains nor expense has been spared in the collection of materials for the construction of the Map to render it as complete as possible....”
