Reclaiming the Everglades: South Florida's Natural History, 1884-1934

Amount of award: $137,188

This consortial project includes collections from the University of Miami, Florida International University, and the Historical Museum of South Florida. The collections document the history of South Florida, especially the Everglades, a unique subtropical ecosystem that has a rich, but troubled history. The project will digitize 9,291 items, including photographs, drawings, writings, correspondence, and related materials from politicians, landowners, real estate companies, scientists, naturalists, engineers, and Indian rights activists. This environmental and social approach illuminates the complex and interrelated history of the natural and built environment in South Florida.
